Bostau Fm

Period:
Carboniferous

Age Interval:
, K3

Province:
Kyzylkum Region

Type Locality and Naming

Along Mount Boztau, Bukantau, Central Kyzylkumy. Ya.B. Aysanov et al. (1984) under the name "Bostauskaya Suite"

Synonym: Bostauskaya Suite, Бостауская св.

Lithology and Thickness

In the Upper part (Thickness about 100 m) predominate polymictic conglomerates and gravelites, including small (0.3 to 0.5 m) and large (up to 7 m) rootless boulders of light gray, gray, and dark gray limestones with Upper Bashkirian microfauna, identical to that developed in the nearby carbonate ridge. In the region of the Okzhetpes Mountains, the upper part of the section is represented by a package (thickness 140m) of sandstones, siltstones (aleurolites), and claystonse (argillites).

In the Lower part of the suite (thickness 150m) - black and dark gray claystones (argillites), interbedded with gray, brownish-gray thinly horizontal and cross-bedded siltstone (aleurolites), less frequently polymictic sandstones and gravelites.

Thickness of the entire suite 250m.

Lithology Pattern:
Limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Contacts are tectonic. Schematic stratigraphic column indicates the lower contact as Akoy Fm

Upper contact

Contacts are tectonic. Schematic stratigraphic column indicates the upper contact as Keriz Fm

Regional extent

Central Kyzylkumy, Bukantau, in the form of separate areas and narrow strips along the northern slope of the Bukantau carbonate ridge, northern slope of Kokpatas, northwestern Mount Boztau, surrounds the carbonate formations of the Okzhetpes Mountains. Along Ya.B. Aysanov et al., the most complete section is traced in the regions of the Baymen and Okzhetpes Mountains.

Fossils

Foraminifers in the limestone boulders (Aysanov et al., 1984; 460).

Age

The age of the suite is determined as Early Moscovian of the Middle Carboniferous epoch based on the presence of Late Bashkirian foraminifers in the limestone boulders (Aysanov et al., 1984; 460). Age equiv to Autiekuduk Fm
